I can safely say that I do not know what to consider this in any respect. Senpai wa Otokonoko. The premiere was a blended bag for me, leaning modestly towards the constructive. Some issues labored, some didn’t. However it’s extra a matter of the subject material. Mangaka Pom actually obtained his tooth into this, and since that is his first serial work, it’s exhausting to say whether or not he has the talents to deal with it. On the very least, I want a greater sense of how he approaches the fabric to type my very own opinion.
While you’re coping with a subject like crossdressing at school, the primary hurdle is whether or not the present is simply going to take advantage of it for reasonable jokes and clichéd humor. I do not suppose that is the case right here – Pom appears to need to inform this story in a delicate method. Then it is a matter of whether or not the writer can pull it off efficiently Doing that. And there, who is aware of? There’s not a lot in Undertaking #9 or director Yanagi Shinsuke’s resume to counsel they might paper over any cracks within the script.
The principle character right here is Hanaokaa Makoto, a sophomore in highschool. Probably the most notable factor about him is that he cross-dresses, even at college (he alters in a storage room, suggesting his household is both unaware or disapproving). He is aware of that this makes him a little bit of a social pariah, however makes no try to cover that that is who he’s. Nevertheless, first-year Aoi Saki is unaware of Makoto’s open secret. When she confesses, she thinks she’s confessing to a ravishing senpai woman. Makoto wastes no time (to his credit score) in telling her that he is an otokonoko (though it appeared odd to me to take action by taking off his shirt). However to his nice shock, this appears to pique her romantic curiosity much more.
It is value noting that boys who costume like ladies do not essentially choose different boys romantically, and ladies who costume like boys do not routinely choose ladies both. Some do, some do not. And Makoto appears to contemplate himself an “Ace” – he is actually by no means developed romantic emotions for anybody, so he would not know for certain. He sees himself as a foul romantic goal for Aoi, each as a result of he is afraid of what the affiliation will do to her socially and that he’ll by no means be capable of develop emotions for her. However she’s not deterred in any respect, and begins a pursuit that borders on obsessive (and doubtless crosses the road).
The third nook of the sequence triangle is Taiga Ryuuji, Makoto’s childhood pal. He adamantly denies any attraction to Makoto, whereas concurrently carrying round photographs of him. He targets Aoi as a possible rival, although there appears to be a component of his protectiveness in there – Ryuuji says that many individuals have been “chasing” Makoto as a joke. Finally, Aoi is so impressed by Ryuuji’s devotion to Makoto that she decides to grow to be his apprentice. This strikes me as a little bit of a story useless finish, however I’ll reserve judgment at this early stage.
As soon as once more, the execution right here was a little bit of a blended bag. The repeated use of the chibified artwork type did not work for me in any respect. As for Aoi, she comes dangerously near being downright annoying. However Makoto’s circumstances are portrayed with some sensitivity, and there is undoubtedly room for some good dramedy on this theme. On this quarter Hourou Musuko is just about the undisputed instance, and it would not be truthful to carry the rest to that commonplace. However it does set the bar fairly excessive for me – if this sort of story is not completed with some class and beauty, it could actually rapidly grow to be tasteless. So by all accounts, it is too early to guess the place Senpai wa Otonoko goes to land.
